Illinois Car Accident Statistics

First, the good news: car accident injuries and deaths continue to go down, or at least remain steady across the country. This can be seen as due to several factors. The combination of safety features on vehicles, driver awareness, public announcements of the dangers of drinking and driving and why seatbelts should be worn, and, yes, even lawyers has helped to make our roads safer.

As of this writing, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation, There have been a total of 358 fatal crashes within the state for a total of 391 deaths. This is 48 less than at this time last year. While this statistic involves more than just car accidents, it can be surmised that there are many more cars involved than other kinds of motor vehicles.

One area where car accidents in Illinois are going to be high is Chicago. This is obviously due to the sheer amount of traffic in this large metro area. In 2008, there were 156 fatalities as a result of car accidents. In 2009 there were 141, and so far, there have been 72 this year. We’re seven months into 2010, so if the statistics are correct, the numbers should be lower or at least not higher than they were last year. At least, this is something we can hope.

Some Other Statistics

In 2008, there were 1,043 fatalities due to car accidents in Illinois. This is the lowest number of deaths since 1923. The state government believes this is a direct correlation to seatbelt safety laws signed into effect in 2003. There were just over 94,000 injuries that year.

While these statistics are something to be cheered, they could have and should have been lower. Alcohol related accidents have claimed the lives of 98 people in 84 accidents so far this year. In 2008, 44% of all fatally injured drivers had a positive blood alcohol content. Nearly 50% of fatally injured drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 had a positive BAC. Clearly, the state of Illinois can do better.

Given that there are some bright spots, there will inevitably be dark ones. Although we already know if alcohol related injuries and deaths were removed, there would be fewer annual statistics, another problem that is very recent is that of texting and driving. It is estimated that 3% of all car accidents are due to a driver not paying attention because they were either sending or receiving a text on their cell phone. This is another venue that states, including Illinois, are tackling through texting and driving bans.

Overall, while these are simply a snapshot of car accident statistics in Illinois, they give some insight into a possible trend.
